Rumors came true when Nintendo announced a Direct via their Nintendo Today! App. It debuted live earlier today, Friday, September 12th bright and early at 9 A.M. EST. Gamers have been eagerly awaiting for a proper Direct after several other showcases: a Kirby Air Riders Direct and Indie Direct Showcase in August, and a Partner Direct in late July. Despite the Switch 2 launch in June, we’ve seen only a trickle of first-party game releases and news. After about an hour of updates and announcements, how would you rate this Nintendo Direct?
Firstly, this Direct was a good, solid HOUR, and it kicked off strong with Mario’s 40th anniversary. There were several announcements and updates, from comments about the Nintendo Museum and Kyoto marathon to big news on a new Mario Bros. Movie and Mario games. The new movie will take us into space–The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie–and is the highlight of the anniversary. Of course, Nintendo graced us with ports of Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy 2 and amiibo. If that wasn’t enough, we will have a new Mario sports game–Mario Tennis Fever, Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch 2 Edition, and a brand-new Yoshi title– Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. If that wasn’t enough, there will be two Mario Galaxy themed amiibo. Even if the Mario franchise wasn’t your bag, you can’t deny that this was a hefty offering. Besides, Nintendo slammed us with many other first party news…
We also have dates for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Each came with new trailers and tidbits to analyze for days to come. And yes, we have MORE amiibo for Metroid Prime 4 as well as Kirby Air Riders. Looks like amiibo won’t be dying out any time soon.

Other first-party news includes new content for Donkey Kong Bananza, three Pokémon related announcements, oh, and a NEW Fire Emblem game: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
In addition to that, we have some great third-party updates and announcements like Hades 2 and the arrival of Resident Evil 9: Requiem and Gold Editions of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village. The new trailer for Requiem is sick.
Last but not least, although I’m not sure how popular this would be, but we see the Virtual Boy arriving to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Who knew?

This September Direct has approximately 45 different announcements, with news of first- and third-party titles, amiibo, and non-gaming related news. There were tons of titles to make Switch 2 owners especially feel more secure about their purchases with a more fleshed out pipeline. In my opinion, this has been a top-notch Direct, one we sorely needed in some time.
