On October 6th, 2015, the world was introduced to Rock Band 4. I had written an article almost two years ago at this point asking if we would ever play along again with another Rock Band game. Well Since the final DLC release back in 2024, we have not heard much about the game up until recently when they announced that on October 5th, 2025, DLC will no longer be able to be purchased from the store. So, what happened and what may be next?
The reason for this of course is that the DLC is cancelled because of a decade licensing agreement that was in place. Most of the core setlist has expired, so what does that mean for everyone? Rock Band 4, the game, along with the DLC, has been delisted for purchase, anyone who has bought the game and any of the DLC previously to its delisting will be able to download them to compatible systems. If you have the physical game, you will only be able to play the base game with none of the updates that would have been available before the games delisting.
This leaves many questions when thinking about where the IP sits. What could be next, is there a next? When looking into these questions deeper we know a few things that can indicate where the band is headed. We do know that Harmonix was acquired by Epic Games in 2021 and that at one-point rumors of Rock Band 5 were unofficially buzzing in the crowd. We still have no confirmation on this rumor. We also Know that Epic Games has Harmonix working on Fortnite Festival, which is a controller-based Rock Band like experience. They have prioritized this moving forward.
The fact that Harmonix has been focusing on Fortnite Festival and that the music licensing is up, we come to a fork in the road. If Epic Games wants them to focus on other things, then Rock Band may become a thing of the past. If they decide to pursue a new Rock Band or something similar this would be a perfect time to rethink the business model of the game. Could they make it better by having it double as a way to play Karaoke at a bar, educate kids and adults music in a more meaningful way, or perhaps incorporate some social media aspect to it?
With that said, I leave you with this musical quote from Green Day.
“It’s something unpredictable
But in the end, it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life.”
Song: Good Riddance
What do you think the future of Rock Band will be? Will we see a new Rock Band 5 game, a hybrid perhaps, or do you think the genre has run its course?
