Sony Acknowledges PS5 Shortage, Issue Possibly Extending into 2022

Sony reported 7.8 million units of PlayStation 5 sold through March 31. By the end of the fiscal year, they hope to achieve at least 14.8 million units. The elephant in the room was acknowledged shortly after reporting their financial results in a briefing to analysts–they continue to struggle to meet demand. While we’ve been given various contributing factors to the shortage, Sony still cannot provide a guaranteed timeline of when the supply will finally match its demand. Hiroki Totoki, the company’s CFO, said:

“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand”

Former President Trump’s trade war with China and the COVID-19 pandemic complicated production goals for chip manufacturers, which snowballed into a semiconductor shortage–something the console needs. CEO Jim Ryan did state in April that he was in talks with AMD, a chip supplier. Ryan hoped these talks would result in the end goal of increasing supply of the PS5, but everyone is still waiting on results. Until then, it seems that Hiroki’s statement proves ominous about the console’s availability through 2022, much to the chagrin of PlayStation fans hoping to finally get their hands on one.

  1. […] signature? If it does get passed, how long would it take to actually make an impact? Check out our news article where Sony acknowledges that the PlayStation5 shortage will continue to be an issue for some time. […]

  2. […] I am also concerned about the availability of the Zelda with loftwing amiibo. As stated before, amiibo accessibility in stores has been a constant issue. At the time of this writing, preorders for the figure are already sold out on Amazon, Best Buy, and Gamestop’s websites. Now isn’t the time to panic; most assuredly, Nintendo will replenish stock in time, but who’s to say that the figure will still be available months from now? Should Nintendo not keep up with demand, then… well… you’ve seen what’s happened with the Series X and PS5. […]
