All About Kazuya, the Latest Edition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Mr. Sakurai, from Sora Ltd. and the director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, talked in-depth about the latest addition to the Smash Bros. line-up on a June 28th broadcast. Kazuya from the Tekken franchise was initially revealed as the next playable fighter at the 2021 E3 Nintendo Direct.

Mr. Sakuri’s presentation alternated between commentary and game footage to help fans better understand why Kazuya was selected for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and to show off his fighting skills. Multiple moves were on display from Dragon Uppercut to Gates of Hell.

One day I heard a voice from the heavens. It might’ve been from a company with the Japanese character for “heaven” in its name…The voice was telling me Masahiro…Masahiro…You must get Tekken into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate…Like it’s that easy.

After displaying a plethora of moves, Mr. Sakurai delved into the challenges of selecting the best Tekken character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He explained that there were fundamental differences between the game play and genre. He didn’t discount Super Smash Bros. as a fighting game, but rather stated the obstacles had to do with game design theory. Kazuya was the ideal Tekken candidate because of his Devil’s Power which could be utilized for mid-air jumps as well as special and smash attacks.

While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans are divided on the arrival of Kazuya, the broadcast displayed the passion and attention to detail that Mr. Sakurai and his team poured into this new addition. If you haven’t already done so, check out the presentation:
