Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is truly the ultimate entry in the series, at least in terms of the number of playable characters. There are currently 85 fighters (depending on how you count) and the final DLC character is set to be disclosed tomorrow, October 5, 2021. Throughout the reveal of the base game, and the rollout of the DLC, there has been much speculation about what characters will get the coveted invite. Who do you want, and who is likely to be chosen for the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter?
The announcement of the last fighter is sure to excite some and disappoint others. However, it’s important to remember that the game will have had 23 new characters after the release of the final fighter. With one spot left, it’s only natural that most people who are desperately wanting a specific character added will be let down. Because this is the final character, right?
While some fans pine for a third Fighters Pass, in several presentations Nintendo and the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, have made clear that this is the end of the road. In the September 23, 2021, Nintendo Direct, the show’s host, Yoshiaki Koizumi, said that there was “some news about the last fighter” and that the October 5, 2021, event would be “the final Mr. Sakurai Presents video.” While there may remain some hope for additional content to be unveiled at the presentation, and even a slim chance of a bonus fighter, it feels very unlikely. With such a large roster, it doesn’t seem fair to complain.
So then, who could this last character be? Over the course of the last three years we’ve seen a variety of new characters added, both first party Nintendo characters and third party fighters from other developers. We’ve seen highly requested fan favorites, like King K. Rool, Banjo Kazooie, and more. We’ve also seen characters that tie into recent Switch games like Byleth and Pyra/Mythra. It has been suggested that, historically, the final character for previous Smash games hasn’t been a hugely asked-for addition. However, this is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Nintendo Switch is extremely popular, and the fact that Nintendo is pushing a presentation separate from their Nintendo Direct events to have the reveal indicates this could be a big one.
There has been speculation and requests for big third-party characters like Crash Bandicoot, Sora, Dante, Ryu Hayabusa, and many others. On the first-party front, Waluigi seems to be highly desired. Others, like Bandana Waddle Dee and Isaac, are often cited as well. If one thinks Nintendo is being practical, a pick like the protagonist from the upcoming game Shin Megami Tensei V could make sense. While there have been alleged leaks and rumors, Nintendo has done a good job of keeping many of the DLC fighters secret.
Whoever it is, for me personally, I’ll be happy. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been one of my favorite Switch games that I keep coming back to, and more characters means more variety, and more fun. While of course a character that I have a personal connection with would make me happy, I know that every fighter has its fans and any reveal will delight at least some folks.
