Recently, Kotaku declared Aliens: Fireteam Elite dead in the water, observing the startlingly low number of players actively playing the game on Steam. While the assertion may have been misleading, the game has seen a significant decline in activity as other similar games–such as Back for Blood–had big releases. Today, Cold Iron Studios released a “Year 1 Roadmap,” perhaps in an effort to assure players that developers have not in fact abandoned the game.

The road map promises major game updates quarterly and seems to recognize the desire for new environments and gameplay modes, a frequent request from fans on the Aliens: Fireteam Elite Discord server. Describing the imminent release of the update and also their vision for the game’s future, developers had this to say:

We will introduce a New Game Mode, as well as a New Feature, Weapons, Attachments, Challenge Cards, and a variety of cosmetics! If you enjoyed Horde Mode then we’re sure you will enjoy our next new game modes. You can expect twists to the session length, goals, and the tools you will have available, as well as the cool new environments they will be set in.

Noticeably absent from the road map is any direct mention of new campaign missions. The current campaign content and corresponding in-game dialogue makes it very clear there are other battles to fight, including threats of human forces such as the UPP (United Progressive Peoples). It’s hard to imagine that Cold Iron Studios wouldn’t deliver more storylines as they’ve repeatedly stated a desire to add fresh and unique content to the canon of the Aliens universe; however, if the game does collapse, anything is possible.
