RUMOR: Twisted Metal PS5 has Switched Developers Mid Cycle

Since PlayStation’s inception in 1994, Sony aimed at capturing the older audience that Nintendo just wasn’t. One of the most iconic games from that era was the vehicular combat title Twisted Metal as well as its subsequent sequels. Since Twisted Metal Black on the PlayStation 2, fans of the series have been wanting a true return to form for the series. After the mediocre PlayStation 3 title, many though Sony would retire the series all together.

After the release of Destruction All-Stars last year, however, rumors started swirling about a new entry to the beloved franchise and that developer Lucid Games was in fact taking the lead on it. These rumors were followed up by respected sources stating as much later in the year and that it even had a release window, releasing along side the Twisted Metal TV show that is also in development, starring Captain America actor Anthony Mackie as John Doe.

This week, the unannounced project seems to have hit a speed bump, as Sony has reportedly pulled Lucid Games off of the project and handed it over to newly purchased studio Firesprite Games. According to the report from Video Games Chronicle, the removal of Lucid was “sudden” and “unexpected.” Their removal, though unconfirmed, seems to be due to the fact that Destruction All-Stars‘ reception was mediocre at best. Firesprite is currently working on VR title Horizon Call of the Mountain and is currently hiring for a multiplayer project, so this rumor holds some weight.

The Twisted Metal TV show is being headed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions and is being billed as a comedy where Anthony Mackie’s John Doe is forced to cross the wasteland controlled by ruthless raiders ala Mad Max Fury Road, led by the iconic ice cream truck driving clown, Sweet Tooth.
