PlayStation Looks to Bring More Live Services Games This Fiscal Year

Last Thursday (May 19th) Jim Ryan, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said that PlayStation is set to release two live services games during the current fiscal year (which ends in March 2023). The remarks were made during a business briefing highlighting that Sony currently possesses one live services game — MLB The Show 22.

MLB The Show features a mode labeled “Diamond Dynasty” which enables players to buy randomized packs of cards to try and build a dream team, either by earning or buying in-game currency.

When asked by an analyst if the two additional titles had already been announced or if that included a Destiny release from Bungie, Ryan said: “Destiny is not included in the three games slated for FY22. The two others are yet to be announced.” Ryan said Sony considered live service titles to be “games with no end”.

An infographic during the briefing gave better details about Sony’s current agenda. The slide indicated that Sony is planning to have released 12 such titles by its 2025 fiscal year with an additional three arriving in FY23, another four in FY24, and two more in FY25.

VGC speculates that Naughty Dog’s in-development The Last of Us multiplayer game might be one of the company’s planned live services games. There are also other online projects in the works from more of Sony’s studios including Guerilla (Horizon Forbidden West), Uk-based studio Firesprite, Firewalk (a studio founded by Bungie veterans), and Deviation Games (a new studio helmed by former Call of Duty veterans Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell.

Also during the same briefing, Ryan suggested that at least some of the live service games it has in development are planned for PC.

Are you excited about Sony’s plans to expand its live services games catalog? What types of games would you like to see Sony produce under its live services games banner? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
