Marvel Zombies Establishes Opposing Teams, Will Carry a TV-MA Rating

The undead are rising again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Animation revealed more details about its upcoming animated show Marvel Zombies, which is set to release on Disney Plus in 2024, during its panel on the second day of Comic-Con International. Marvel hasn’t officially announced which phase the show will fall under but, based on dates, it will be in either Phase 5 or 6.

The studio showcased stills from the upcoming animated series, leaving fans to speculate of the upcoming plot. Marvel did confirm it will pick up where the fifth episode of What If…? left off.

One still did show a group of undead versions of Hawkeye, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Ghost, Abomination, and the Eternals’ Ikaris. Another still showcased a group of living heroes including Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Shang-Chi, Katy Chen, Death Dealer, Kate Bishop, Jimmy Woo, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian and Kamala Khan.

Another revelation from the panel included the show garnering a rating of TV-MA. This is a unique move for the MCU given up until this point, all of its shows were rated TV-14 or lower.

There is a dispute on whether the Netflix-Marvel shows are part of the MCU. These shows include Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones, all of which were TV-MA. Marvel Studios did not produce these shows but Marvel Television did.

Marvel did say Marvel Zombies will have “all the gore and splatter you want from a zombie show.”

There is no official cast list but Simu Liu, who plays the live-action Shang-Chi, is confirmed to return. What If…? did feature many of the live action actors voicing their animated counterparts.

Marvel always does a fantastic job at getting us to talk about an upcoming project while not actually revealing much. This appears to be the case here and will likely lead to some fun speculation down the road. The TV-MA rating also has fans excited about what a zombie Marvel show can actually pull off.
