Ryan Reynolds dropped some big news about Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 including a release date and a big return from X-Men movies.

Reynolds announced via a Twitter video that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine in this film. Reynolds’s video also revealed the movie will release on Sept. 6, 2024.
The video came with all the humor expected from Deadpool movies as Reynolds started out by apologizing on behalf of the cast and crew of Deadpool 3 for missing the D23 Expo earlier in September.
He assured fans that the crew was doing all it could to ensure the upcoming film would stay true to character while still being fresh. Ultimately, he said he was out of ideas except for one.
At that moment, Jackman walked behind the couch where Reynolds was sitting and Reynolds asked him if he wanted to play Wolverine one more time.
“Yeah, sure Ryan,” Jackman responded nonchalantly.
The reveal came as a surprise to many fans. Both Reynolds and director Shawn Levy hinted at they had been sitting on this news for a while.
Reynolds even had a great callback to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, saying “hard keeping my mouth sewn shut about this one.”
Reynolds followed his initial video up with another that sought to further explain Wolverine’s appearance in the MCU given the events of Logan. Of course, in true Deadpool fashion, it didn’t reveal much.
There has been no official reveal regarding a rating, but Rhett Reese did indicate the film would remain R-rated, similar to previous installments.
“They’re not gonna mess with the tone,” Reese said, according to Variety. “I mean, I’d never say never, I guess there’s an outside chance, but we’ve always been told it can be R-[rated] and we’re proceeding as if it’s R. We would like it to be R, we always have, so I don’t think that’ll change.”
This film will be Deadpool/Wade Wilson’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s unclear if Deadpool 3 will be Wolverine’s introduction into the MCU, but fans have long awaited a Wolverine announcement.
The MCU is using a multiverse plotline that has helped bring previous actors back to MCU films as alternate versions of that character. Spider-Man: No Way Home featured the return of Tobe Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker as well as a host of other villains from past Spider-Man movies.
To me, this is exciting news as I have always loved Jackman in the role of Wolverine. While the announcement appears to have met large amounts of support, there are some who think Jackman had the perfect send-off in Logan and shouldn’t return.
Still, it’s exciting to see how this will all come to pass. I’m not going to lie, I initially thought this was a massive troll job from Reynolds but quickly changed my mind.
