Developer FromSoftware announced on Twitter on Wednesday that the online features for the PC version of Dark Souls: Remastered have been reactivated.
In January, the servers for the PC ports of Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 were all temporarily deactivated by publisher Bandai Namco due to hacking concerns.
Reddit user TripleBrownMeow had brought a “serious exploit” to the publisher’s attention by sharing on the Elden Ring Subreddit that a Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit could allow hackers to “run arbitrary code on your machine without permission.”
In essence, hackers that connect to other players through the games’ PVP features could access their opponent’s computers remotely, potentially stealing banking information, login passwords, or even run malicious malware or install bitcoin miners.
Fortunately for FromSoftware and Bandai Namco, this exploit was discovered just before the February release of Elden Ring.
The closing of the PC servers also did not effect those playing on other platforms, such as Xbox One, PS4, or Nintendo Switch.
With the online features restored for Dark Souls: Remastered, all three games are now back up and running, along with their expansions.
