Marvel character Silk as she appears in the comic books

Sony, Amazon Agree to Multi-Show Deal to Bring Spider-Man Characters to Prime Videos Starting with Silk

3–5 minutes

Sony’s Marvel universe has found a new home.

Amazon Prime Videos has greenlit a slew of live-action shows featuring Sony-owned Marvel characters. The batch will begin with Silk: Spider Society, which features The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang is developing.

Kang will work with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, producers of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, on the upcoming project. The series is slated to release on MGM+, formally Epix, domestically before heading to Prime Videos worldwide.

Kange said she is thrilled to get started on the project.

“I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive into my first challenge — bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen,” she said via a press release.

Silk: Spider Society will center on Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman who becomes the superhero Silk. Moon, who Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos created in the comics in 2014, has spider powers as the same spider that bit Peter Parker also bit her.

The show synopsis describes Moon as someone who escapes imprisonment and looks for her missing family.

Moon has debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as her character was on Parker’s academic decathlon team that traveled to Washington DC in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She also cameos in Avengers: Infinity War on the bus where Parker leaves to go help Tony Stark.

In both of these appearances, she did not show any abilities or powers and many fans missed the cameo altogether. Tiffany Espensen portrayed Moon in both cameos. This show is likely not in the MCU, but rather part of Sony’s separate Spider-Man-themed projects.

There are no further details available regarding Silk: Spider Society or any other future projects. Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke did say she is excited about the future of these series.

“Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimaging of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film,” she said via a press release.

“Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers.”

A series based on Silk is not news to some as reports initially surfaced back in 2020 regarding a potential project. At the time, Atypical writer Lauren Moon was attached to the project with later details revealing Watchmen producer Tom Spezialy would be showrunner.

Kang has worked on The Walking Dead since 2011 when she became a writer. Two years later, she became co-executive producer before jumping to showrunner in 2018 at the start of the ninth season.

Sony has the rights to over 900 Marvel characters linked to Spider-Man though there is no indication on which of those characters are part of this deal.

Sony has been busy with live-action and animation films surrounding Spider-Man and spinoff characters.

Along with Tom Holland’s MCU reboot of the character, Sony has released two Venom films and a Morbius movie. There are several in the works including films about Kraven the Hunter featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson.

As far as animation, Sony is working on an Into the Spider-Verse sequel called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is slated for a June 2023 release.

This is great timing for Amazon to make this announcement as sentiment appears to be running high thanks to the success of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

It’s also nice to see Sony giving attention to some of the lesser-known and more recent comic characters that haven’t appeared much in film or TV. Overall, this will be a fun development to watch, especially as more projects begin to sprout.
