Boss Rush Banter: What’s the Best Platform for Indies?

Recently, I’ve taken a break from playing AAA titles to dive back into the world of Indie games. At home, I have two consoles that I use regularly: Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.

Both console companies have a lot to offer when it comes to playing Indie games. The Nintendo Switch has an impressive library available on the eShop, including a few timed-release exclusives. There are frequent sales as well, with some Indie games priced at just a few dollars. Beyond the great library and prices, being able to play Indie games on the go just feels right; there’s nothing better than a good visual novel, walking sim, or cozy game while sipping my coffee at the local café.

But as much as I love my portable Indie machine, I must admit: I play more Indie games on my Xbox Series X. Microsoft’s Game Pass is the best deal in gaming and Indies are a big part of that. There are so many games that I’ve tried simply because I didn’t have to pay anything. There’s nothing worse than shelling out some money only to find a game isn’t for you.

Recently, a friend recommended the Indie game Omori, a 2020 release from OMOCAT. When I previewed the game, it struck me as something I’d never purchase on my own. The art style looked out of my element, and the gameplay seemed too slow. But since it was free on Game Pass, I gave it a try.

While I haven’t made up my mind yet on the game itself, I’m loving the freedom that comes with Game Pass. I can try or not try a game based on its merits and not because of the price. I never thought I’d write this (I grew up on the NES / SNES), but right now my Series X is my favorite console. Xbox prioritizing Indies makes it the best platform available.
