There’s been a void since E3 went away, but the anticipation is still there.
Summer just feels like the time for video game announcements and we get some of that with some big showcases on the horizon. This includes tomorrow’s State of Play from Sony, showcases from Microsoft and Nintendo, and Summer Game Fest among other opportunities for updates and reveals.
This is also a potentially important time given that it will set the stage for the rest of 2026, including the coveted holiday season just six months away. This leaves us all with something to look forward to in the coming weeks.
So, what are you most excited to see revealed or updated this summer during not-E3?
The answer will differ from person to person. For me, I’m particularly looking forward to updates on Marvel’s Wolverine and Beast of Reincarnation.
Both of these are slated for a late summer/early fall release so any information on either game should be in-depth. Marvel’s Wolverine, in particular, has floated around for years so it’ll be exciting to see what will come.
One area I will be watching is Nintendo. The Switch 2 is coming on a year old and it has yet to make a case for itself for me. There are a couple of factors in that such as the price, but also the library.
For me, Nintendo has yet to reveal that game that makes the Switch 2 a must-buy. There are many ways it could go with this.
One area that will be interesting to watch is whether the long-rumored The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake comes to fruition. Zelda served the original console well as Breath of the Wild helped make a case for the Switch 1 early on.
Third party seems to be the focus for Nintendo, but that makes it a hard sell for me since many of the games being released are in my PlayStation library. Exclusives do help sell the console so I will be watching that.
Personally, I am hoping for a new installment in the Xenoblade saga or maybe a Bravely Default 3. This is the RPG fan in me hoping aloud, but Nintendo really does have a wide open field to build on as it heads into the second year of the Switch 2.
I do not own an Xbox so I’m not sure what to expect there. That said, I am interested in the new Fable game that has been delayed into 2027. Banjo-Kazooie also has gotten some rumblings lately and that would definitely be interesting.
All in all, the summer not-E3 announcements are pivotal for the coming months. It’s important to temper our expectations, that doesn’t mean we should defer excitement. Half the fun of these things is making predictions.
