PAX East 2023: Fictiorama Studios Serves Us Digital Voyeur Sim Sequel, Do Not Feed the Monkeys 2099

Do Not Feed the Monkeys debuted in October 2018 as point and click digital voyeur sim that peels back the layers of various social commentary. I was lucky enough to speak with Producer and PR Manager, Luis Olivan, about the sequel, Do Not Feed the Monkeys 2099.

Luis explains that his studio received so much positive feedback on the first game, so Fictiorama studios created another one with additional narratives and resource management elements. The “2099” eludes to the more futuristic setting. The foundation is similar–you are new to the Primate Observation Club, where you hack surveillance cameras. Each feed is referenced as a cage, and the people you observe are the monkeys Of course, the rule is the never engage with the subjects, hence the title of these games.

The resource management aspect of Do Not Feed the Monkeys 2099 is thorough. You must do your job, but you also need to watch your sleep and hunger levels. The money you spend and type of food you eat can impact you. Luis mentioned the inclusion of a Relaxed Mode if the resource management is too much for you and you’d rather focus on the surveillance mechanic. As you observe the monkeys, you can conduct searches of key words or scan the digital newspaper for clues.

This sequel continues to tackle various social commentary, including limited resources and climate change. In fact, the setting of the year 2099 allows us to view characters who are nostalgic for the Earth we destroyed (“Earth nostalgia”). You can bet on the presence of androids and aliens as well!

While the art direction is similar to the first game, you can expect more refined graphics and additional modes (e.g. Relaxed Mode as mentioned above but also a fast-forward mode when applicable). Several endings will be available as well.

I got to speak with Luis of Fictiorama!

It was a pleasure to learn about Do Not Feed the Monkeys 2099, and it was also wonderful to learn about Fictiorama Studios–a family run company of three brothers. Do Not Feed the Monkeys 2099 is expected to release on Steam and the Nintendo Switch May 25th. I wish it great success!
