We live in a world where most people sit more than they should, including myself. I have a desk job, and my hobbies involve sitting at a computer or with my console of choice. It takes a toll on my back (especially once I hit my 30s), and in the process of sprucing my video game room set-up, I was gifted a gaming chair. My initial thoughts were: ‘Wow. I’m a real gamer now. It will be so comfortable and good for my posture‘. Months later, I felt that was a lie. I began to ask myself if gaming chairs are worth it to own.

Why do gaming chairs exist? Clearly they are meant for hours of sitting. It seems to promise ergonomic nirvana–a place of refuge for my aching back. With tall backs, prominent armrests, and a cushy seat, these chairs are marketed to be a gamer’s dream come true. Heck, dare I say it makes you look “professional” like all the streamers on Twitch. I mean, they do scream look at me.

I’ve tried and tried. No matter how much I adjust the damn thing, I can’t seem to get comfortable. The adjustable lumber and neck support are either too much or not enough. I ended up adding my old lumbar pillow provide the full support I need. It can’t just be me, right? I felt the urge to write a banter about this when I watched one of my favorite YouTube stars comment on how uncomfortable gaming chairs are. I no longer was alone in the thought that perhaps these specialized “gaming chairs” are overrated.

However–I am not an ergonomist, so do not take my word for it if you’re considering purchasing one. I found this article (by an ergonomist) very helpful in educating yourself on purchases and how to use them. Tech Guided also wrote a helpful article if you are considering purchasing one. Both seem to agree that gaming chairs overall can be supportive of good posture, but there are lots of considerations.
