Top 10 Mentopolis Memories

These last two months, we’ve come back again and again for each new Mentopolis episode, and our Prefrontal PIs repeatedly delivered. Though Hank Green came out swinging, every player stretched their chops, showing off how they made their way to the Dimension 20 dome.

Take a seat at our Nostalgia Cafe and jump right into these magnificent Mentopolis moments!

10) Detective Hunch Curio meets Imelda Pulse

Opening up in the office of a private detective set the 1920s noir stage. As the embodiment of curiosity, Detective Hunch Curio leaned into the cliches with a childish glee. The ever quick-witted Mike Trapp played him brilliantly. From the very beginning, Hunch chased the wonder, jiving with Imelda Pulse (played by Siobhan Thompson), who was impulsivity incarnate.

Imelda Pulse took to the femme fatale archetype, introducing herself with a fake name only for it to utterly crumble in the face of her status and notoriety. As Imelda’s recklessness got Elias Hodge into the situation, the power of her whimsy came in swinging, and Siobhan never let up.

9) Dan Fucks kills Chief Tightass

Though Freddie Wong repeatedly rolled in the wrong direction as Dan Fucks, no roll had as hilarious a fallout as his escape from handcuffs which led to the death of Chief Tightass.

Detective Hunch Curio, The Fix, and Dan Fucks arrived, using Dan as a distraction to get into the evidence locker. This is a huge turning point, allowing our Prefrontal PIs to uncover a key piece of evidence; however, in a facetious attempt to reveal the deception while keeping the cuffs in place, Freddie gets what might just be his highest roll of the game. Between the ensuring chaos and his conversation with Justin Fication, the fourth episode of Mentopolis may be where Fucks shines the brightest.

8) Ronnie Reptile

From his first introduction when The Fix visits Madam Loathing’s House for Wayward Interests, Ronnie Reptile stole our hearts. Brennan’s joyful portrayal as well as Ronnie’s clear trust and adoration for The Fix immediately softened the otherwise hard hitman.

His drawing brought the Prefrontal PIs back to the house of Madam Loathing, and after a fun fact from The Fix triggers a shift in him, Ronnie reveals the true villain. He also might just be the cutest character design of the season.

7) Anastasia Tension and Imelda Pulse

Siobhan Thompson and Danielle Radford played these two cousins with a rapid fire repartee and a hilarious disconnect. Danielle portrays Anastasia Tension, who has left her family fortune behind, but her previous privilege proves difficult to outrun. While she stands for attention, Anastasia put herself on ice, trying to push for change by working her way up when she had the power to push from above since the beginning.

Counter to her cousin’s nose to the grind and stubborn streak, Siobhan’s Imelda takes full advantage of her privilege and wealth to chase her every whim. Her recklessness provides the foundation for her cousin’s big chance, and these two clearly support each other even if they don’t understand.

6) The Fix’s Pep-Talk for Conrad Schintz

Hank Green had numerous quotable facts that he wove into fantastic monologues from eagle talons to snake anatomy. While talking to Conrad, The Fix shares that swallowtail butterflies’ tails don’t serve an aerodynamic purpose. Instead, they are a decoy meant to distract birds, allowing a visual hold that actually breaks off naturally to allow the butterfly to escape. Conrad is the butterfly, not the tail. He is what should be saved, not something to be sacrificed to escape.

Some of the most emotionally powerful conversations occur between The Fix and Conrad, including the reveal of the ice skates and The Fix’s determination to unlearn the lesson which Conrad took from his prior failure.

5) Conrad Schintz Stands Up to Fight

From the first episode, Conrad Schintz was an absolute sweetheart. His introduction involved a man berating him and then refusing to pay correctly. Conrad lets it go, revealing he has a fund he keeps to make up the money for people who refuse to pay the full amount, taking money out of his own pocket for others. Alex Song-Xia plays him with such a genuine earnestness that every word from their mouth tugs at the heart strings, so it was an incredible surprise to all when Conrad stood up to Ivana Popov (A.K.A. Fight).

Ivana was a win in and of herself, and the fight between Hunch and Dominick Nuntz might’ve taken center stage, showing the audience how the combat would go, but the true growth happened outside the ring. Conrad stood up for himself, and even though all the reflexes turned in their keys, Conrad’s punch revealed the power remained within them the whole time.

4) Imelda Pulse Seduces H.V. Lance

Siobhan Thompson is the most experienced player in the Dimension 20 dome for Mentopolis. As one of the Intrepid Heroes, she has featured in the majority of seasons, playing everything from an anxious elf wizard high school student to a licorice princess to an aquatic alien happily involved in a multilevel marketing scheme. From the very first episode, Imelda Pulse strode in wearing her nature unapologetically on her sleeve.

If any moment showcased the benefits of this impulsivity better than her seduction of H.V. Lance, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. From their first meeting to the closing epilogue, these two fit perfectly together. H.V. Lance is constantly on edge, yet Imelda manages to surprise him, literally sweeping him off his feet in what might’ve otherwise been a gun-slinging standoff.

3) Justin Fication and Conrad Schintz are Best Friends

Nothing can get between a boy and his dog. Well, except maybe mind control. Living on the streets together, Justin Fication and Conrad Schintz only had each other quietly pushing for the Big Guy to change his ways. From the beginning, their sweet albeit slightly tragic declarations of friendship foreshadowed Old Yeller level of horrors coming down the pike.

When the horror finally comes, it is the tearful proclamation of friendship which gives Conrad the strength to reach out and bring his best friend back from the influence of the white key.

2) The Fix Flirts with Pasha N.

The Fix’s subtle fact-based intimidation method never ceased to amuse, and when we learned of his fondness for the wayward interests in Madam Loathing’s care, Hank Green’s character quickly stole our hearts. Then Brennan Lee Mulligan introduced Pasha N. In her, The Fix met his match. Hank even danced when Brennan had Pasha give a fact for a fact.

Of course, the tragedy of Ichabod hung between them, shattering the flirtatious volley of fun facts, but of all the characters, The Fix had the most genuinely wholesome epilogue.

1) Anastasia Tension’s courtroom speech

Though everybody knows Danielle Radford is a dramatic tour de force, the power of her monologue in the courtroom approached our already high expectations and absolutely smashed them out of the park. Anastasia Tension summoned the full force of her investigative power and elegant turn of phrase to smash Mark Bition and make the impossible happen.

She managed to get Mark Bition behind bars, clearing one of the major and more threatening players from the board while standing firmly in his territory. Additionally, making Dan Fucks the temporary mayor brought Anastasia into perfect position to get Fawn’s key and then Flight’s as well.

With Mentopolis completed, Dimension 20 will undoubtedly turn its intention to another series. We have our fingers crossed it’ll continue to explore other RPGs like Kids on Bikes. The 1920s noir twist was a fun run, and Hunters Entertainment has others up their sleeves.
