Boss Rush Banter: Paul Giamatti Is the Most Underrated Santa Claus

The holidays are quickly leaving so let’s take some time to discuss everyone’s favorite gift-giver: Santa Claus.

Over the years, many actors have donned the mantle of Santa Claus in a variety of movies. That’s not including those who dress as Santa in their respective movies, but rather those who actually portray the character.

Each actor brings their own flair to the portrayal, offering us unique interpretations of ol’ Kris Kringle. We all have our favorites and we recognize those who excelled in the role.

But what about those lesser-known portrayals?

One of my favorite interpretations is Paul Giamatti’s in Fred Claus. The movie centers on Santa’s deadbeat brother Fred, but Giamatti shines in this role.

The actor nails the kindness aspect of Santa and he wears the beard and cap remarkably well. What’s unique to Giamatti’s interpretation is how he interacts with his family.

We all know Santa acts as a sort of boss to the elves, leaving few interactions with those seen as his equal. We get some of that when Mrs. Claus is in a movie or when Santa finds himself among other humans such as Elf or Miracle of 34th Street.

Fred Claus, at its core, is about family drama and brotherly love. Santa having a complex relationship with his brother is not one that is typical in holiday movies.

Sure, many of these moments are played for laughs, many at Santa’s expense. Still, Giamatti shines with all this because he’s believable as both Santa and an estranged brother.

Look, Fred Claus isn’t usually at the top of many people’s holiday watch list. I get it. I still think it’s worth a watch each year because of the unique portrayal of Santa’s family drama.

Since there aren’t many portrayals like this, I believe Giamatti’s performance deserves some attention. He may not rise to the level of Elf‘s Ed Asner or The Santa Clause‘s Tim Allen, but he does deserve his recognition.

But what about you? Which Santa actor do you think is underrated? Is there one that may not be considered the best, but is a personal favorite to you? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
