Extremely Powerful Capybaras starts off with four classes: Warrior, Druid, Assassin, and Bard. If you’re curious where those four alone fall, go check out the full game review. However, whatever ranking you might have, once you’ve unlocked the two locked classes, you’ll quickly realize something. The Mage is the worst.
Let’s look at the Mage’s class-based ability, Odd Orb. A giant orb about the size of the capybara themselves arises for a period of time a bit away and hangs first on top, then to one side, then the bottom, and finally the other side before starting all over. If this was a slow rotation, maybe it could’ve worked. Instead, it’s stationary in comparison to the capybara, sticking in one of the four locations and do less damage comparatively than the other class-based abilities. The synergy upgrade to Arcanist unlocked with Watermelon Amulet when all abilities are tapped helps, but if you can have three rotating orbs, why not start with the first orb orbiting?
When looking at all the numerous active abilities which could’ve taken the place of Odd Orb, the decision to have the Mage as one of the classes which players can unlock seems either like a way to hide a bad character design or a desperate grab for an additional achievement which fits the adventuring party theme of their other characters.
Simply rotating the orb in a slower version of Hummingbirds could’ve made it more useful without crossing too closely into another class-based ability. They could’ve switched in any other active ability. Also, there are two ability slots in the shop which are empty, and from the rest of the game, those two abilities likely should’ve been unlocked after successfully syngergizing the Mage and the Gunslinger. Either a glitch prevented this for me, or there are two slots open to torment completionists needlessly.
Studio Bravarda’s ode to capybaras has adorable graphics. Unfortunately, aspects of gameplay fall short, and the Mage is the clearest example.
