Update: Atlus later announced that demos on the PlayStation 4 and 5, and the Xbox Series X and S are available as of Feb. 22 at 9 p.m. PST/midnight EST.
It’s been 10 years in the making, but the Unicorn Overlord demo has arrived.
Sega unveiled a new trailer for the tactical RPG during Nintendo’s Feb. 21 Partner Showcase, highlighting the demo launching immediately on the Nintendo Switch. Sega also revealed that save data will transfer over when the game releases on March 8.
Vanillaware, developer of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, has worked on the game for over 10 years after Takafumi Noma first came up with the concept in 2014. Atlus will publish the game in Japan and Sega, Atlus’s parent company, will publish it everwhere else.
The developers are touting Unicorn Overlord as a “rebirth of tactical fantasy RPG.” It takes place on the continent of Fevrith following exiled prince Alain and his army as they seek to reclaim the throne.
The game will combine open exploration via an overworld with tactical combat. The game will not utilize a grid-based system and combat will be in real time. There are also options to recruit up to 60 unique characters.
While the announcement came for the Nintendo Switch, the game is set to release on the PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox Series X and S. At the time of publication, there is no official announcement about demos on other consoles.
Reacting to the News
To be honest, I didn’t even know this game existed until now. I am so glad I got a sneak peek at this because I am now really excited for it.
I’ve seen the comparisons of this game to old-school Fire Emblem and Ogre Battles games. I can definitely see the comparison and I think that’s going to excite a lot of people.
I’ve only ever played turn-based tactics games so I am excited to see what the demo has to offer. On trailer alone, this game looks like a lot of fun and will add nicely to the tactics genre.
It’s shaping up to be a big year for Atlus and Sega especially in terms of RPGs with Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio bolstering other releases coming this year. Unicorn Overlord will make a nice addition.
