We are only a day away from what is expected to be an nerd-filled Game Developers Conference this week in San Francisco, California. Already we are seeing an explosion of new games, trailers, and upcoming releases set to take center stage.

Even my own email inbox is slammed, as game developers and studio publishers aggressively gear up to showcase their latest creations. From thrilling new indie titles to highly anticipated IP releases, there’s something for every gamer to look forward to.

With many developers, studio heads, and game enthusiasts already beginning to descend in mass into the Golden Gate city, it’s the perfect time for a news roundup to get you primed for the gaming extravaganza ahead.

Let’s dive into a few of the latest gaming industry announcements and previews, as we look forward to what promises to be an unforgettable GDC—one filled with innovation, creativity, and gaming excellence.

1. Wuthering Waves

The Buzz: With over 11 million pre-registrations for Kuro Games’s Wuthering Waves, the open-world sci-fi anime RPG is set for a possible release to PC and mobile sometime in May 2024.

Wuthering Waves is a visually-striking open-world sci-fi RPG set on a post-cataclysmic planet. With dynamic movement and freedom of exploration, it promises an epic experience for players of all levels. Engage in fast-paced PvE combat with special dodge, parry, and counter mechanics, while utilizing the innovative Echo System to capture enemy abilities.

As a Rover awakening to a world of advanced technology, players embark on a story-rich adventure filled with endless possibilities. Combat offers a high degree of control, with the Echo System adding strategic depth. The game’s profound narrative unfolds as players delve deeper into its vast world, keeping them hooked with every quest and interaction.

At GDC 2024: Members of the Kuro Games team will be at GDC Booth #412 in the Esplanade Ballroom showcasing Wuthering Waves and demoing the latest game content to a select number of individuals.

2. Nif Nif

The Buzz: Springfox Games announces a new family-friendly single-player title called Nif Nif, which is now available to wishlist on Steam – with a Kickstarter expected to launch soon.

Created with love by a gamer mom, Springfox Games looks to delight young gamers with the unveiling of Nif Nif, a charming roguelike deckbuilder designed for children aged 4-12. Immerse yourself in the joy of strategy as you embark on a heartwarming adventure to clean goo-covered creatures, revealing their adorable animal forms. Craft delicious soups with unique effects, each adding to the whimsical nature of the game.

3. Stay Dead

The Buzz: Animagic Studios is set to debuts their first title in the gaming space, Stay Dead, at GDC following the game’s “Hero Award: Best game overall” win in Vancouver, marking a milestone in their quest for global creativity and entertainment dominance.

A brainchild of the creative minds behind Discord’s own beloved Wumpus, Stay Dead emerges as a hilariously twisted survival adventure for teens and young adults. Set on the exotic island of Porto Morto, this game subverts the typical zombie narrative and plunges players into a chaotic world where a loving zombie family fights off relentless cure bots.

Your mission? Protect your undead kin at all costs, for in Stay Dead, family is your lifeline. Lose them, and risk returning to the mundane life of a regular human.

4. Sophia the Traveler

The Buzz: Developed by Memo Gogo Games and set to be published by Thermite Games, Sophia the Traveler arrives on Steam and Nintendo Switch on April 11. Pre-orders starts on March 21 on Nintendo Switch, with an 80-page full-color digital comic book available to purchase alongside the game launch.

Sophia the Traveler immerses players in the romantic allure of Venice, inspired by childhood memories and fueled by the game creators’ virtual exploration of Venice through Google Maps and travel books.

Roam Venice’s stunning cityscapes with Sophia, a vibrant character who embodies the love for life, music, and culinary delights. In a Where’s Wally-style visual novel, search for objects and characters amidst the vivid hand-painted backdrops. Get ready to immerse yourself in the lifelike sounds of Venice, and find quirky Easter eggs scattered throughout the game. The cozy game allows players to explore 10 distinct scenes featuring over 1800 character assets, 100 sequence animations, and more than 100 European buildings, including iconic landmarks of Venice.

The game will be accessible in multiple languages, including English, Italian, German, Spanish, Simplified & Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

5. Isles of Sea and Sky

Cicada Games’s Isles of Sea and Sky is now available to wishlist on Steam.

6. Crystals of Naramunz

The Buzz: Now in closed beta development, Crypto Rogue Games unveils Crystals of Naramunz at GDC 2024—a free-to-play hack ‘n’ slash ARPG integrating Web3 technology for seamless in-game item ownership.

Journey through a post-apocalyptic steampunk universe, embracing fast-paced combat and extensive character progression. Enjoy thrilling seasons, where a catastrophic recurring event called “The Nexus” continues to affect the inhabitants of Naramunz, wiping the possessions and memories of all characters. 7. Dune Awakening

The Buzz: Conan Exiles developer Funcom teases more details about Dune Awakening, an open-world survival MMORPG set on the deadly planet of Arrakis. Players can sign up to the Beta now and wishlist the game on Steam.

Rise from a mere survivor to a dominant force on the perilous planet of Arrakis, encountering iconic characters and unraveling mysteries along the way. At GDC: The Funcom team will be giving a behind closed doors presentation of Dune Awakening to content creators and media at GDC. They will also be at PAX East from March 21 to March 24 at Booth 1343, where attendees can meet Funcom to have a chat about the MMO, win prizes and more!

8. Detective Dotson

The Buzz: With a free demo already available on Steam, India game studio Masala Games announces Detective Dotson, a mystery detective title is coming to PC in the fall.

Detective Dotson is a mystery detective game offering an immersive experience set in modern-day India. Founded by Shalin Shodhan, a former EA and Pixar alumni, Masala Games aims to capture the richness and beauty of Indian culture through simple yet captivating gameplay.

With a blend of realistic visuals and pixel art, the title is both a game and a Indian-cinema inspired animated mini-series adventure. Join Detective Dotson on his quest to uncover his father’s killer, delving into a world of criminals, clues, and team recruitment.

Featuring an original soundtrack that combines Indian street drums with funky guitars and flute, Detective Dotson promises an authentic and engaging portrayal of India’s vibrant culture and bustling streets.

At GDC 2024: Stop by Conference Booth SU2 in Moscone North Hall F to meet with the Masala Games team and learn more about Detective Dotson’s thrilling investigations.

9. Cataclismo

The Buzz: Digital Sun Games announces their new fortress builder RTS game Cataclismo, with an anticipated release dat set for July 16th, 2024.

Developed by the same creators of Moonlighter and The Mageseeker, Sun Games’s Cataclismo is an innovative real-time strategy game merging brick-by-brick construction akin to LEGO® with physics-based stronghold building and diverse tactical gameplay.

In the game, embark on a journey with Iris, a skilled user of magical abilities, as she leads an expedition beyond the last bastion of humanity, Hogar City, in search of an artifact to restore hope to a world ravaged by mist and horrors. Encounter mysteries and dangers lurking within the mist as you uncover the secrets of the artifact and confront the darkness threatening humanity’s survival.

With the ability to dive into both single-player campaigns and multiplayer modes, including Survival and Creative Modes, get ready to build a fortress and train your troops in hopes you can survive the swarms.

At GDC 2024: Meet the Digital Sun team at GDC from March 17-22 to get a sneak peek at Cataclismo ahead of its release. They will also be participating in Day of the Devs, which is also happening in San Francisco.

10. Sushi Battle Rambunctiously

The Buzz: Sushi Battle Rambunctiously is now available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop. The game will also be released in the near future on Steam, Xbox Series X|S,Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.

Touted as a “Physics-Based Comedic Battle Royal Party Game,” compete in fast-paced sushi battles where speed, precision, and creativity are key. With intuitive controls and a variety of sushi-making techniques to master, Visual Light’s game offers a fun and engaging experience for players of all skill levels.

Players can also challenge their friends in local multiplayer mode or test their skills against AI opponents in single-player mode.

Japanese and European players have already dived into the sushi-making action since its launch on the 14th, and now, players in the United States can join in on the fun when the game releases on March 21st.

At GDC 2024: You can play Sushi Battle Rambunctiously directly at the independent game studio’s Booth N3027 from March 18th to the 22nd.

12. Paper Trails

The Buzz: With over 25 wins and nominations, Paper Trail is launching on May 21st on PC, Console, Switch, and Netflix Games.

Guide Paige, a young academic, on her journey away from home, mastering the art of folding to solve puzzles and unveil secrets. Developed by London-based Newfangled Games, Paper Trail offers a unique top-down experience set in a foldable paper world.

It’s innovative folding mechanics shape the gameplay, allowing players to drag, shine, and push objects to overcome challenges. With engaging characters like Paige and visually stunning worlds inspired by printmaking and watercolor, the title promises an immersive experience.

At GDC 2024: Catch Newfangled Games studio director, Henry Hoffman, at GDC alongside his brother, the game’s artist, to delve into the world of indie development and sibling collaboration.
