The original Telltale became a beacon in the video game industry renowned for its story-based narrative and perplexing decision-making. Over the years, players have faced a plethora of choices from sacrificing characters to deciding who lives and who dies. Here is my ranking of the most popular Telltale games and the reasons why.
#3 – The Wolf Among Us
Coming in at a respectable third place is The Wolf Among Us. This game beautifully crafts a blend of dark fantasy with the lore of classic fairytales, following Bigby Wolf, as he investigates the murders of hidden fairytale characters. While it certainly holds a place in my heart, the long wait for the second season has grown incredibly. Amazingly written as this game is, there isn’t any emotional bond crafted with the main protagonist or even the secondary characters. It feels like I’m playing a game instead of immersed in it.
#2 – Batman: The Enemy Within
Batman: The Enemy Within is undeniably my favorite rendition of Bruce Wayne. This, in my opinion, was a great successor to the first season of the game. The choices in this game truly do matter, as they do in all Telltale games. As a worthy and well-deserving successor to the first game, the second season continues to delve deeper in this twisted life of Bruce with choices that truly impact the game. The plot twist at the end of the first game, however, seems to make the anticipation of the second fall a bit short. The suspense is still there, no doubt.
#1 – The Walking Dead: Season 1
The Walking Dead: Season 1 has earned its title as Telltale’s masterpiece.
This game defined the essence of story-telling as it has a simple narrative with complex characters. Beautifully crafted, the story is strong with characters that stick to your heart like glue. Fun fact: I named my first car, Clementine”, in honor of the video game. I first played the game when it was originally released on iOS in 2012. For over 10 years, I have followed her journey and grown alongside her. The choices in the game hold profound consequences that will have you reflecting on your moral compass.
Final Thoughts: Three More Games to Try
I purposefully excluded Tales From The Borderlands, Game of Thrones, and Guardians of the Galaxy, as they are significantly less known but great games as well. The three games ranked, however, have made a mark in my life as a 20-something-year-old navigating life.
