The Chaos Dwarfs are an isolated society of Dwarfs who fell to chaos-worship when natural disasters isolated them from their kin. They are vicious, brutal, keeping goblins under an iron hand, though they (understandably) love a tall hat. Unusually for their kin, they are masters of magic…but their bodies rebel, turning more to stone with each spell cast. Luckily, they have goblins ready to run the ball to the touchdown zone.
Blood Bowl is a board game originally designed by Jervis Johnson in 1986. A loving parody of classic Warhammer Fantasy, it asks one all-important question: “What if all the Warhammer factions could work out their differences with a ‘friendly’ game of American football?”
During a battle, the Dwarfs and Orcs discovered the strange temple of the god Nuffle, and the rules that makes up his rites. After that – and discovering the strange, green grass-like surface the games are played on – the game of Blood Bowl spread throughout the world, replacing war…but not the violence.
After years in the wilderness, banned from official Blood Bowl tournaments by the NAF, the Chaos Dwarfs are back! Relegated to playing their own leagues in the inhospitable Dark Lands, they’ve honed their skills through trial by (literal) fire and they’re ready to set the gridiron ablaze. Welcome back the Zharr-Naggrund Ziggurats!
But since the collapse of the NAF in 2488, Chaos Dwarf teams are once again free to participate in more prestigious competitions. Their game has evolved in the time that they’ve been away, with new positionals and other tricks, but their gameplan is much the same as it ever was: punch first, play later.
They still bring a contingent of malodorous Hobgoblin Linemen to perform mundane tasks such as catching the ball, holding the ball, and being tackled while holding the ball.
The Chaos Dwarfs are a resurrection of a team from a previous incarnation of the game, and most units play in a recognizable style: study, but unusually versatile due to Bull Centaurs and Hobgoblins. The Blockers no longer start with the Tackle skill, but Iron Hard Skin, which prevents their armor value from changing.
Flamesmiths’ Breathe Fire leaves hit players prone, including themselves.
The Chaos Dwarfs do not have an announced release date, but will likely be available by the end of the year.
Games Workshop has begun to once again credit model designers, but so many of the artists, writers, and designers go unnamed. This is unacceptable. As the creative force that keeps the company running, the creators responsible deserve full, clear, and public credit.
