Filmdeg Miniatures is a YouTube channel dedicated to recording interviews with key figures from the 1970s-2000s British wargaming and hobby scene. Notably, they have interviewed John Blanche, who defined the design and art language of the various Warhammer lines; Tuomas Pirinen, designer of Mordheim; and Trish Carden, designer of many iconic miniatures. Filmdeg Miniatures is swiftly amounting to an invaluable oral history of the hobby.
Johnson created Blood Bowl, and co-created games like Necromunda and Epic 40,000. He is one of the most recognizable and beloved White Dwarf writers, whose J-Files articles cultivated a hobby community. He won an Origin Award for Best Miniature Rules. Recently, he has worked on Valour & Fortitude, Black Powder Epic Battles’ Waterloo Campaign, and the forthcoming Heroes of Might and Magic: Battles. At Games Workshop, he kickstarted tournaments—with a focus on friendliness and all aspects of the hobby—and global campaigns.
“It was a worthwhile thing to do,” Johnson said of his time writing the J-Files in White Dwarf, “because it started to talk about things to do with the hobby that couldn’t really be addressed anywhere else. I think if I look around the hobby at the moment, one of the things I think is a little bit sad is that there aren’t more things like that going on. Rather than doing a battle report, doing ‘Here’s how to win with this army’ or something like that, if they talked about something like a gamer’s love-hate relationship with dice, or how to cope with losing games, or the social contract that goes on there. All different kind of aspects of the hobby.”
