I honestly, genuinely believe that ports of the HD versions of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess could be launch titles for the Switch 2. In fact, I think that is the reason we haven’t gotten them so far.
Look I get it, articles speculating on the Zelda Wii U ports are a dime a dozen, but I have always been an HD port pessimist. I wasn’t surprised when they weren’t announced for Zelda’s 35th anniversary, and I’ve never expected them in any of the Nintendo Directs since. I was of the opinion that if they weren’t released early in the Switch’s life cycle, they likely weren’t coming.
I do, however, think it makes total sense for them to be Switch 2 launch titles.
There are a handful of potential reasons why the games never came to the Switch. Perhaps they ran into technical problems when porting the games, which paused development. Maybe they simply felt it would be a better business decision to hold off. None of these are good reasons, but I can see them convincing a corporate bigwig.
None of those excuses work for the Switch 2, and the time is ripe for these ports. The console itself will be a good deal stronger than the original Switch, which would clear up any technical snags. Nintendo console launch lineups are notoriously barebones, and these games would be excellent for bolstering the lineup. The timing is too perfect.
Ports of The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD would make fantastic launch titles, and they would absolutely serve to hold people over until the first wave of post-launch games hit the platform. I have to assume Nintendo knows this too, and while the company is constantly making baffling decisions, I truly don’t believe neglecting the Wii U ports was done without purpose.
It would be utterly, truly bizarre to port basically every Wii U exclusive except the HD remakes, and I believe their master plan was to save them for the Switch 2, to fill up their launch title roster.
Call it a hunch.
But who knows, I could very well be wrong, and Nintendo might simply have some strange bone to pick with the HD rereleases of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. We will have to wait and see.
