SPOILER WARNING for the ending of Monster Hunter Wilds
With this being the first ever Monster Hunter game in which I beat the game’s main storyline, I decided to take a deeper lore-look into the actions that your character takes at the end.
During the big reveal at the end of the game, you and your fellow guild members find that a long hibernating monster created by the ancient civilization is siphoning the life force of the land for itself. This is causing catastrophic effects on the environment and in turn disrupting the patterns of the local wildlife. Eventually, all will perish should this continue.
However, instead of choosing to turn off the power source of Wyvern Milk, your Hunter decides to destroy the parasite, thus the fight between you and Zoh Shia commences along with potential legal trouble for the Hunter in the future.
As you may have seen, your handler Alma has the authority to designate which monsters you can hunt, and will hold the player back should they try and hunt something that’s not authorized by her as a liaison of the Hunter’s Guild.
The Hunter’s Guild’s purpose is to not just slay whatever monster it can find, but it’s about preserving the balance of nature. As one of the main themes in the story, bad things happen when nature gets all out of whack. Thus Alma’s job is to determine what preserves nature’s balance and it’s the Hunter’s job to rectify the imbalance.
Alma does in fact, not authorize him to destroy Zoh Shia. Famously, the Hunter says, “By my own order…” hunting and killing Zoh Shia as a means to preserve the entire ecosystem of the Forbidden Lands. Yet it was a life taken without guild approval.
There are many possible punishments from the guild the Hunter might face, but none as interesting as possibly coming face to face with a Guild Knight. Guild Knights are enforcers of the rules along with their secondary job as hunting poachers who over hunt monsters to extinction. From what lore I’ve read about them, they can be intimidating individuals who also have the expertise in taking down people if need be.
Now, the Hunter upheld the guild’s principals in making sure nature’s balance was kept. Yet, it does mean that a monster was hunted to possible extinction. They did this without any official approval for the betterment of the environment.
Personally? It’s more than likely the Hunter’s consequences won’t be as severe as getting a Guild Knight sent after them. However, I think that would be an interesting concept to play with.
If the franchise wants to soft reboot itself for a more story-driven direction, then fleshing out the lore of the guild itself would be a fascinating aspect and get people hooked on Monster Hunter.
