ARLINGTON, TX — Championship Sunday at Esports Stadium Arlington brought a full day of fierce competition, emotional storylines, and historic performances across multiple titles, as the Collegiate Esports Commissioner’s Cup (CECC) 2025 came to a close.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Redemption Realized
The day began with a bang as the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate grand finals saw Fisher College take on UT Arlington, who earned its spot through the lower bracket — and were the only team to take a game off of Fisher all weekend.
Fisher entered with a 1-0 lead, but UT Arlington, with momentum and home crowd energy on their side, pushed back hard. Vibe and Atomic delivered standout performances, with Atomic claiming an incredible nine stocks in the finals alone. The teams battled to a fifth and final game — echoing the 2024 heartbreak Fisher suffered against Winthrop. This time, however, Chronus sealed the win for Fisher, flipping the script from last year and earning Finals MVP for his composure under pressure.
“I’ve NEVER seen a Smash set like that,” one desk commentator said. “It was electric from start to finish.”
Street Fighter 6: Bloo Breaks the Bracket
Next up, the inaugural Street Fighter 6 championship saw Florida International University’s Bloo stun top-seeded Paladin with a decisive 3-1 win. Bloo never even needed a bracket reset, forcing Paladin to switch it up after falling behind 0-2. A composed final round gave Bloo not just the trophy, but a $10,000 scholarship and a breakout moment on the collegiate stage.
Valorant: Saints Stay Steady
Now in Valorant, I didn’t pay to much attention to it because it is definitely a game that gives whiplash. Still, Maryville University secured its spot in the finals with a clean 2-0 victory over Northwood. Meanwhile, Winthrop emerged from a grueling 3-map clash with Cumberland, raising the question: Could battle-tested Winthrop overcome a fresh Maryville?
Delays and technical issues pushed the match into primetime, but it was worth the wait. The grand finals went the distance, with Maryville ultimately closing it out. Geeza took home MVP honors — notably earning that recognition across two schools this year: St. Clair and Maryville.
Rocket League: Concord Claims the Crown
After Valorant, we had the Rocket League finals that featured Concord University and Akron, two CRL powerhouses. While Akron fought back late in the series, Concord held firm, sealing the deal 4-2 behind Simas, who averaged a goal per game and was named Series and Tournament MVP. This match led me to be more interested in the game thanks to the way the crowd was into it and the energy it gave off. I have a new perspective on both the idea of using cars to play soccer and Rocket League itself.
Overwatch: Redbirds Rewrite the Record Books
Illinois State University ended the day with a statement. In a dominant sweep over Fisher College in Overwatch, the Redbirds achieved something no collegiate team had done before: winning three championships in the same game title across a single season. It was a crowning moment for a storied program and a near-perfect close to a competitive year.
EsportsU Awards: Celebrating the Leaders
In between matches, the EsportsU Awards highlighted some of the key figures behind the scenes:
- Advocate of the Year: Chase Neukam – Shenandoah University
- Tournament Organizer of the Year: ToniAnn Convertino (NeonStar) – EsportsU
- Commissioner of the Year: NECC & Jacob Van Ryn
- School of the Year: Boise State University
Every nominee and winner was absolutely deserving of recognition. Each has worked tirelessly to help shape the collegiate esports space into what it is today — a growing, inspiring ecosystem others can aspire to. These individuals didn’t have a playbook or a roadmap to follow; they are the pioneers. They’ve carved paths, built community, and laid the groundwork so the next generation can build even stronger pillars on the foundation they’ve created.
Final Thoughts
Day 3 at CECC was everything a championship Sunday should be — thrilling, emotional, and unforgettable. From Fisher’s redemption arc to Bloo’s breakout win to Concord’s Rocket League dominance to Illinois State’s Overwatch dynasty, May Madness lived up to the hype. I can only hope these stories are ones we hear as the next matches begin to arise in this space, as new stories began to write.
As the lights dimmed and the trophies found new homes, one thing was clear: collegiate esports is thriving — and this is only the beginning.
