It took 20 years, but The Simpsons are back in theaters.

The long-running animated sitcom will return to the big screen on July 23, 2027, nearly 20 years after the original debuted in 2007. Disney’s 20th Century Fox made the confirmation on social media, a post that included a poster.

Aside from a date and a poster, 20th Century Studios has not volunteered any other details. The movie will premiere about a year before The Simpsons hits its 40th season in 2028.

This announcement comes nearly six years after show creator Matt Groening teased another movie at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. At the time, Groening said the movie would come “one of these days,” alluding to Disney wanting its money’s worth from the franchise.

The original The Simpsons Movie sees the family flee to Alaska after Home pollutes the Springfield water supply, forcing the government to quarantine the town in a gigantic glass dome. The original move brought in over $536 million Worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

While The Simpsons often operates in a vacuum, it still is part of the larger Disney family that includes Marvel and Star Wars. Variety reports that the film is slated to take the place of an unnamed Marvel project, placing it between the tentatively scheduled Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (Dec. 17, 2027).

Disney has not provided official word on this plan.

The Simpsons originally began as a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. The original shorts features show cast members Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner as Homer and Marge Simpson, respectively,

The reaction to the shorts was largely positive and The Simpsons spun out into its own show for the 1989-90 TV season. The show is amid its 37th season, the start of a new four-year run for the series after Disney renewed it through the 2028-29 season (season 40).

Reacting to the News

There’s a bit to unpack with this news.

The biggest question on my mind is “why now?” It’s been almost 20 years since the original and that one never seemed groundbreaking. Sure, it was a lot of fun for the time but it felt complete.

Having another film is a nice bit of fan service, but time will tell if it lives up to the hype that is slowly building around it. All of that said, I still will welcome a new movie.

Many are in agreement that the show’s best years are behind it. Particularly during the ’90s, The Simpsons was groundbreaking and served as a launchpad for several big names in TV such as Conan O’Brien and Greg Daniels.

Despite that seemingly universal opinion, many have noticed the show may be in a bit of a renaissance with a lot of chatter centering on Season 33 onward. Furthermore, the show has gained fame as a determinant of the future as many of the show’s one-off jokes have become reality years after the fact.

All of this has kept the adult animation in the public eye, providing for a steady stream of viewers that have followed. This was not the case in 2007 when many thought the show was long past its prime.

Bringing a movie in a boom for the series should add to the popularity and may be a way to send the show off with a bang. There’s no confirmation on its future but 40 seasons seems as good a time as any to properly end it.

No matter what Disney opts to do, The Simpsons will continue preserving long past it was supposed to and a movie is a nice reminder of that.
