People may have seen the AI-assisted game mods, like Spider-Man swinging through Batman: Arkham Knight or Call of Duty in Minecraft. As a developer and business owner, I absolutely support these. They shake up the status quo that has settled into game development and breathe new life into old games.
Authors, fans, and developers have always imagined combining media into a massive multiverse. Ready Player One is one example, and so are power-scaling arguments and series like Death Battle. Now that the technology is at everyone’s fingertips, this feels like an organic evolution. Even big studios stumble or lose touch. Marvel’s Wolverine drew criticism for quick-time events with little visible effect, and Highguard shut down within weeks of launch. Players are clearly hungry for fresher ideas, and maybe seeing The Legend of Dragoon in Final Fantasy VII would be a wake-up call for some of them.
Sure, people need to be prepared for consequences and follow the law. I’m not advocating theft, but like the right to repair, consumers should have the right to modify their games—an age-old tradition. That’s especially true on PC, which has a long history of modding, while consoles often make it more difficult. Eventually, the barrier between games will be less about what developers support and more about what players can create.
Think of literacy. If reading and writing had been reserved for the upper class, we would never have had Mark Twain or Stephen King. Giving more people the tools to create doesn’t replace professionals; it widens who gets to create, to make something great.
