Netflix has been the biggest streaming platform in the world for years, but with new competition coming from heavyweights like Disney and Amazon, they may now be upping their game according to a new report from The Information.
In the report, it suggests that Netflix is seeking a gaming executive for an expansion into video games, especially the gaming subscription scene, as a way to expand beyond films and TV in an effort to combat Disney and Amazon.
In the report, it is suggested that Netflix is looking to create a gaming service that can go hand-in-hand with its current streaming platform. According to the report, Netflix, has spoken to the “veteran game industry” as cited by The Information. This wouldn’t be the first time Netflix has dabbled in the gaming world with gaming releases of Stranger Things, Peaky Blinders and a few others, with some having also appeared in the Game Pass library.
The report suggests that they want to create “a bundle of games” in a similar fashion to Apple Arcade. It likely means that we can see more Netflix shows or even movies be turned into games in the coming years and even new original games from the streaming giant. Also mentioned in the report is their will be no ads with the service, which is a good sign for everyone.
In a response to the report Netflix had this to say, “Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering—from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV. Members also enjoy engaging more directly with stories they love—through interactive shows like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild, or games based on Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel and To All the Boys. So we’re excited to do more with interactive entertainment.”
Netflix has been known to be pursing the gaming market for a long time and with their recent efforts of turning some of the most popular games like Castlevania and Witcher into TV series to up their original content and with more to come out within the coming year like a Resident Evil series and one based on Assassins Creed.
If Netflix does go into the gaming subscription space, they will have some strong competition with the likes of Microsoft with Game Pass and others like PlayStation Now, EA Play (Also part of Game Pass) and Ubisoft plus.
