PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan announced today in a blog post on SIE.Blog that PlayStation is now a new partner with popular communication platform Discord.
PlayStation’s interest in Discord was a way for the popular gaming publisher to build a relationship between the online chat service and Sony. “Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round,” Ryan describes of the acquisition. “At PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories. It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.”
Recently, it had been reported that Discord had halted talks of a buyout with three potential buyers, one of those being Microsoft which was ready to offer $10B to acquire Discord. All negotiations have been put on hold with a suggestion that a sell-off could be “rekindled in the future.”
“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network,” Ryan continued in his announcement. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
It’s unclear whether PlayStation’s minority investment in Discord is what may have ended all negotiations of a sell-off from Discord, and there are no concrete details on how PlayStation and Discord will collaborate going forward. Ryan is encouraging the gaming community to stay tuned to Sony’s channels and Discord’s Twitter for all future updates.
