Wildcats, welcome to another weekly review of High School Musical The Musical The Series. This week is the first with Nina and Ricky broken up, but it’s also spring break. A quick reminder that we have only 4 episodes left after this; after the season is over we will publish a season review, and a ranking of the original songs performed in season 2. In this week’s review we are going to focus on Gina and Ricky; let’s talk about this week’s episode!
Gina
Spring break means that Gina finally gets to go home to Louisana, however, her flight gets canceled, and is forced to spend the day at the airport trying to find a way out of Salt Lake. While at the airport Gina begins to wonder if EJ is her boyfriend, or if EJ is just a really nice guy; Gina decides that if they are meant to be the universe will send her a sign. After a group call with the East High Drama club, Gina is approached by another student stuck at the airport named Jack (played by Asher Angel). Asher and EJ spend the day stranded together talking about music, theater, life, and love. Towards the end of the day, Gina starts to see Jack as someone she could date, but she ultimately decides she has feelings for EJ. Gina decides to go back to Ashlyn’s house as she can’t find a flight, and as she goes down the escalator EJ is waiting for her at the bottom.
I absolutely love that EJ and Gina are officially “shipped”; these two have such great chemistry on screen together that it really makes it feel authentic. I have talked a lot in these reviews about how much I appreciate the work that Sofia Wylie (the actress who plays Gina) has put into her character this year, but more so I appreciate the fact that she continues to evolve this character from someone who was a villain, to a broken person looking for a home, to now seeing her as someone who has found a person who makes her feel as talented as we know she can be.
Ricky
Ricky is spending his spring break in Chicago with his mom (his parents divorced in season 1), however, he spends most of his visit thinking about Nina. Ricky’s mom tries to comfort him but he won’t open up to her; Ricky finally tells his mom that she hurt him by bringing her new boyfriend to opening night last year. Ricky and his mom have a great talk about how its really hard to move on after a breakup, so Ricky finally comes to the understanding that he needs to let Nina go.
I think this my favorite Ricky-centered episode of season 2; it really hits home with how hard it is to let go of someone you really care about. The moment that Ricky and his mom share where they talk about how much she hurt him is a moment that means more than anything else in this episode. I absolutely love the song that Ricky makes for Nina but more importantly, I love that we are finally done with Nina and Ricky as a couple; don’t get me wrong they look great together but the off-screen drama of Josh and Olivia always put a shadow on their on-screen romance. Overall I love this episode and I can’t wait for the final four episodes of High School Musical The Musical The Series.
