Ted Lasso Review: “Goodbye Earl”

3–5 minutes

“It’s funny to think about the things in your life that can make you cry just knowing that they existed, then they become the same thing that makes you cry knowing that they’re now gone. I think those things come into our lives to help us get from one place to a better one.”

– Ted Lasso

Howdy folks! Welcome to the first Ted Lasso review presented by Boss Rush Entertainment. Boss Rush Entertainment chose Ted Lasso as the next weekly review for one simple reason — Ted Lasso represents a message everyone needs to hear, believe in yourself and life becomes something magical. Each week we will break down the latest episode, then post a full review on Sundays to the new BossRush.net.

Synopsis

In season one, we watched as Ted Lasso coached AFC Richmond to the relegation match, only to lose after an incredible assist by Jamie (former AFC Richmond striker). Season two kicks off with Miguel Rojas attempting a penalty kick to give AFC Richmond their first win of the new season (they began the season with six draws in a row), however, the AFC Richmond mascot Earl (a dog) gets off his chain, and Rojas’s kick ends up hitting Earl killing him upon impact. The episode goes on to explore the mental issues Miguel struggles with after he killed Earl, and how therapy began to show Miguel what is really important in life.

Rebecca (AFC Richmond’s Owner) is giddy about a new guy that she is dating, however, after a double date with Roy and Keeley, she begins to question if she is really into her new suitor, or if she is just excited to not be alone. Roy gives Rebecca some incredible advice in this quote “he’s fine, but is fine enough? Does fine deserve Rebecca? Or does Rebecca deserve someone who makes her feel like she was “struck by f*cking lightning?”

Ted is struggling this episode with the fact that all of AFC Richmond’s games are ending in draws and he thinks he put a curse on the team when he wished for a tie in the relegation match last season. Ted has a moment with Coach Beard where he talks about how he has issues letting other people come into his life to help make it better (in this instance he was referring to a therapist who came to help Miguel). At the end of the episode, we see Coach Lasso realize that therapy helped Miguel and just maybe it could help him with some of the issues from his past.

Breakdown

I cannot begin to describe how excited I am to have Ted Lasso back on weekly basis in my life. I know it’s just a show, but Bill Lawrence (creator of Ted Lasso) has always had a way of making shows that teach huge life lessons (Lawrence created Scrubs, Spin City, and Cougar Town). This first episode has so many great quotes and moments that I think it may be one the best season openers to a show so far in 2021.

This episode talks in-depth about the struggles and benefits of therapy; there are people who have trust issues in therapy that prohibit them from getting the full benefits of therapy, then there are the people like Miguel who go head first in and love the way therapy can help.

In my life, I have been in therapy for a little over 11 years and I cannot begin to describe how much therapy has helped me grow as a human being. I think the struggle with therapy that Ted shows in this episode is one that is easily relatable. In our lives, there are always going to be moments when we struggle to open up and allow ourselves to be vulnerable, because our past has only taught us to fear these moments of opening up. I think this episode is a perfect way to kick the season off.

Rebecca has a storyline in this episode that I easily relate to, and I think it’s one a lot of people will be drawn to; should we settle for something safe or should we put ourselves out there for someone who gives us everything we want in life? I absolutely love the quote that Roy has is in this episode (it’s mentioned in the synopsis) because it awakens me to think back to the moments when I thought settling would ultimately make my life happier. Rebecca’s story is a great reminder to hold out for the person that makes life exciting and worth living for.
