Nintendo has once again come in at the eleventh hour presenting a Nintendo Direct at the tail end of September. There were several updates, trailers, and new content, but which one takes the cake as the most significant?
Once again, Nintendo really knows how to grab everyone’s attention. Halfway through the Direct, the title theme for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time oozed through my laptop speakers, and it immediately caused my heart to skip a beat: Nintendo Switch Online has taken another huge step in their offering with new content: Nintendo 64 and Sega games. A new membership plan will be added where fans of these consoles can play select games from those generations. In addition, there will be wireless controllers made in the likeness of those that went with the N64 and Sega Genesis, but without the wires! Although the exact price of this “expansion pack” and date is yet to be announced, this is a gigantic step in bringing Nintendo up to speed with their online presence.
Surely, it may be a far cry from Gamepass or PlayStation Plus; however, I believe this is an incredible power move on Nintendo’s part. This company is tugging at the nostalgic heartstrings of the demographic that grew up on these titles. This is impactful because now the window of opportunity is expanding, and I am excited to see what’s next. Check out the full list of games that will be available here. Missed the Direct entirely? What stole the show for you? Was it Bayonetta 3 or perhaps the new Kirby game? Will you be purchasing this Nintendo Online “Expansion Pack”? Let us know in the comments below or on our friendly Boss Rush Discord.
