The Nintendo Switch 2 is here and it’s coming a lot sooner than many thought.
Nintendo hosted a Direct on April 2 highlighting the offerings on the console, including various upgrades to original Switch titles. One that will get an upgrade is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
The enhancements for this game will be largely cosmetic with several other quality of life features. While these changes will be welcome on the more powerful console, Nintendo still missed an opportunity to provide some Switch 2-exclusive story DLC.
Now, before you sharpen your pitchforks, I am well aware the next Hyrule Warriors game was announced. Age of Imprisonment will be to Tears of the Kingdom what Age of Calamity was to Breath of the Wild.
It does seem the game will be canon so this may satiate fans on any need for an extra chapter to the game. The challenge with that is the shift in gameplay that won’t feel quite the same as the original game.
If you are content with that, that’s totally cool. I don’t want to take away from that.
I do still think Nintendo missed an opportunity to do to TotK what Final Fantasy VII Remake did when it released its PlayStation 5 upgraded Intergrade version.
This would give players more of an incentive to pay for the upgrade and revisit their save files. A straight upgrade may not be enough because the newer 3D Zelda titles just don’t hold the same replayability as their predecessors.
Personally, I was surprised to see Breath of the Wild get an upgrade given that it is already an upgrade of a Wii U game that seems to have run its course. Tears of the Kingdom feels like it still has some meat.
This is evident with the Age of Imprisonment game being announced. Fans want to return to this version of Hyrule.
Not including an additional chapter or two feels like a miss, especially since Kirby and the Forgotten Land will get one. That’s not a knock against Kirby but Nintendo billed Tears of the Kingdom as its swan song for the Switch so leaving it out of additional content still feels like a miss.
I am sure fans will find their way back to TotK‘s Hyrule to polish off their shrine and Korok lists or to share their wild creations. Think about what Nintendo could’ve brought in with more story.
Once upon a time, I didn’t give up hope for TotK DLC. I since have and I think that’s why this non-reveal stings a bit.
I loved my time with Tears of the Kingdom. It was a lot of fun and enhanced on Breath of the Wild in so many different ways and made me enjoy what was largely the same world all over again.
And then there was a sense of finality.
Once I had done all that I wanted to, I felt let down because that was it. I kept hoping for more but it became obvious that it wasn’t coming. Age of Imprisonment does help but its gameplay differs from the original game that it’s just not the same.
I may be in the minority on this one but I still think Nintendo missed an opportunity to give a Switch 2-exclusive chapter to Tears of the Kingdom. This is especially true since there is no new large Zelda game on the horizon.
