A Week of PlayStation 5

4–5 minutes

After getting the green light to start searching for a PlayStation 5 for my birthday in August, I was able to secure one through an online purchase on August 12th, 2021. After a battle of getting it into my cart twice and having it disappear between that screen and the home address screen both times, luck finally made an appearance. I felt like I just happened upon Abra in a Pokémon game, and I used everything in my arsenal to finally capture it before it teleported away. Even the time between hitting confirm order was like waiting for that poke ball to go from red to white confirming the capture, was completely nerve-wracking.

Fast forward to September 14th, 2021, when I finally received my PlayStation 5. I received a notification just before noon saying my package was delivered, and I immediately texted my wife to confirm this. Of course, she replied, “what package,” and also mentioning she saw FedEx go to the neighbor’s house. Having a slight heart palpitation, I realized she was joking because this has happened many times before–plus I saw the digital signature in my email. As soon as I got home, I acted calm, cool, and collected, as I lightly jogged around the house and searched for the box. When I saw it, I was astounded by its size, not realizing how big the console was.

After removing it from the package, I marveled at the sight, and I gently made my way into the box revealing the controller, the console, and wiring. My kid, who was sitting next to me, was in awe as I removed it from the box, eyes wide and full of amazement–a feeling I’ve had with every new console I have ever owned.

“Is that the new Switch?” my kid asked immediately.

I chuckled a bit to myself. “Well if it was, I think it’s going to be a little hard to carry around with you,” I replied.

I started setting it up to experience what it had to offer, and after some time, it was ready to go. Late that evening, I started my adventure with Astro’s Playroom, which showcased the power of the controller in ways that surprised and shocked me. This, coupled with the graphics and sound quality, really immersed me in the gaming experience much more than I thought possible, but here we are.

The two things that really excited me was how amazing it felt to pull back a bow in the game; the rumble made it feel as though it was taut and ready to fly. The other amazing feeling was during the sandstorm. You could almost feel the grit of the sand hitting you in the turbulent winds. This really brings the game to a higher level.

After a few days, my entire family was addicted to playing this game, and eventually, I got the platinum trophy, which isn’t too hard to achieve. I started downloading various free games from the library that I haven’t played yet, such as Control, Crash: N. Sane Trilogy, and God of War. The game I choose to play though was A Plague’s Tale: Innocence, and I am currently enjoying my time with the story.

The only downfall with loading these games, which has been a total of 12 so far, left me with about 134 GB remaining. This concerned me a bit because I know that I will most likely have to purchase additional storage, which is expensive if you want the faster loading hard drives. Besides the looming shadow of additional purchases, I loved the quiet comparison between the PS4 and PS5 running ambience noise. Sometimes I can’t even tell its running. Its like a gas combustion car versus a hybrid or electric car. The quiet can be nice, but what’s also nice is the thought that Sony put into the design of it.

Sony created a console that is quite large, even more so than the PlayStation 3 original, which shows they are not afraid to create something high quality without worrying over fitting a size or form. Having dealt with small micro-PCs overheating, the bigger real estate allows it to breathe, and gives it better quality of life. This is what I want to see from any technology I purchase.

It’s been an amazing week with the PlayStation 5 under my roof, and I cannot wait to play more games in the future. Games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Resident Evil: Village, and Life is Strange: True Colors are on my list with many more I’m sure to be revealed. So, if this was one week with the PlayStation 5, I can’t wait to see what one year will hold for my family and I. If you have not obtained one yet, hopefully you will be able to get one soon, and if you already have a PlayStation 5 what are your thoughts on it, and more importantly–what are your favorite games?
