Metroid Dread is the Fastest-Selling Metroid Game of all Time in the UK

1–2 minutes

The Metroid series has long been a fan-favorite series since it’s debut in 1986, but it has never really set the world on fire. Though critics and fans alike love most of the games in the series, it’s never done well from a sales perspective, which has led Nintendo to focus on other, more profitable series over the years. This is why it was such a big deal that Metroid Dread came out last week–it was the first original 2D Metroid game since 2002. Fans of the Metroid series need this game to do well so that we can prove to Nintendo that Metroid is a profitable series and one they should continue to explore in the future.

While we don’t have US chart data just yet, the UK charts are out, and Metroid Dread is the third best selling game in terms of physical sales, coming behind major players Fifa 22 and Far Cry 6. Not only that, it is the fastest-selling Metroid game of all time, beating 2007’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. The latest entry in the Metroid series has also already sold 3.5 times as much as the last 2D game in the series (the remake Metroid: Samus Returns that came out on the 3DS in 2017).

This is a big deal for Nintendo’s often ignored IP. The jury is out on whether or not the same can be said for sales in the US, but judging by critical reception and the buzz on Twitter, this is sure to be the game that puts Metroid on the map. If you haven’t played the game yet, please buy it and play it. Even if you are only somewhat interested. Nintendo needs to keep making games like this.
