We live in a day and age where there is a video game for just about everyone. There are full motion video games, simulators ranging from farming to thieving, traditional platformers, first-person shooters, and the all-encompassing “indie”. In fact, we also see many video games that straddle several genres to the point where I’m not even sure if genre really matters anymore.
With an endless library at your fingertips, what aspects of a game do you size-up before purchasing it? Let’s assume you already own the latest IPs that you invest in. What now?
There are several variables that come into play (no pun intended): art-style, gameplay mechanics, price, play time, referral from friends, and even ratings from sources such as Metacritic. Players could be limited to ones that are only available to the console(s) they own. The opposite could be true as well. Some have purchased a new console just to play a new title.
For example, many people tend to favor a game based off its performance with its compatible console. Does it have buttery smooth frame rates on the latest gen Xbox Series X? Sold. Others like myself value a game for its story. I could care less if it’s a platformer or criticized for being “too easy”. If it has a deep narrative worth investing, I am willing to open my wallet. For example, I have long stayed very, very far away from horror games. I don’t like jump scares. I’m pretty much the biggest whimp on the planet. However, I have finally played a couple horror titles (e.g. SOMA, The Medium) because other folks gushed on story.
How do you size-up a potential game purchase? As adults with limited time and financial capacity, we set a standard as what is worth buying or passing on.
