Today marks the second anniversary of the streaming service Disney Plus and Disney is celebrating by announcing a ton of new projects and giving a deeper look at already announced shows and specials. Because Marvel is now owned by Disney, this includes a slew of MCU-related (and one notable non-MCU-related) Marvel projects. See below for a recap on everything that was announced today.
Moon Knight:
Disney Plus released a teaser video that starts off with an in-depth look at the first four original series to debut on the streaming platform (WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…?), as well as a new look at the upcoming Hawkeye and a first look at Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. From Marvel’s press release about the show, Moon Knight is “a new globetrotting action-adventure series featuring a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt.” Starring Oscar Isaac as the titular Moon Knight, as well as Ethan Hawke, Moon Knight will be released on Disney Plus in 2022.
She-Hulk:
Also featured in the longer Disney Plus Day Marvel video is our first look at She-Hulk, including glimpses of Tatiana Maslany as Bruce Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters, as well as a hulked-out Mark Ruffalo.
From the Marvel press release: “She-Hulk follows Jennifer, a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases. She-Hulk will welcome a host of Marvel characters to the series, including the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, and the Abomination, played by Tim Roth.” The series, which they are calling a comedy series, will drop in 2022.
Ms. Marvel:
The third show that aired a first look is the upcoming series Ms. Marvel. Originally scheduled to drop in 2021, it has now been moved to summer 2022.
Introducing Iman Vellani as Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel, the show “introduces viewers to Kamala, a 16-year old Pakistani-American from Jersey City. An aspiring artist, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers–and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world–that is until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to.”
What If?… Season Two:
Not a huge surprise, considering how open the story was left after season one, but the animated series What If?… is getting a second season. “The second season of the fan-favorite animated series. After enlisting the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop Infinity Ultron, The watcher returns in Season 2 of What If?… to meet new heroes and explore more strange new worlds in the MCU’s ever expanding Multiverse.
Echo:
The long-rumored but finally announced Hawkeye spin-off show, Echo was finally announced today. After her introduction in the upcoming series Hawkeye, Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) will get her own stand-alone show, coming soon to Disney Plus. This is especially exciting considering her ties to Daredevil in the comics and the persistent rumors that Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) will be appearing in Hawkeye in a few days…
Secret Invasion:
We’ve already heard about the upcoming TV show Secret Invasion, which will follow Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talon as they uncover the threat of a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for decades. We also already knew that the main leads would be joined by Emilia Clarke (from Game of Thrones), Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Oliva Colman (The Crown), among others. Also released today was the first image of Nick Fury, sporting a grizzled beard and missing his signature eye-patch:
No release date has been given outside of ‘coming soon’, but expect this series late-2022 to early-2023.
Marvel Zombies:
In a surprise announcement, Marvel unveiled a new animated show called Marvel Zombies, but neglected to offer more information about the show. It’s important to note that the logo looks much more like the comic logo rather than the What If?… logo, which would seem to indicate that this is not a continuation of the excellent What If… Zombies?! episode of Marvel’s first foray into animated entertainment.
Agatha: House of Harkness
In another surprise announcement, Marvel announced a WandaVision spin off series called Agatha: House of Harkness, featuring the scene-stealing and fan-favorite character of Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hann. We knew that there wouldn’t be a second season of WandaVision, considering Marvel called it a limited series and also taking into consideration the fact that unique hook of the show would be hard to replicate, but this is a welcome announcement. Hann was one of the best parts of WandaVision, and I’m excited to see where the magic/witch storyline will go with this upcoming series.
Ironheart:
Though we already knew an Ironheart series was coming to Disney Plus starring Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, Marvel released a new logo treatment for the series. Ironheart is set to tell the story of a genius inventor who builds the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. No further details were released outside of the new logo and a release date of ‘coming soon.’
I Am Groot:
Another show we already knew was coming, I Am Groot is another animated series that will follow baby Groot’s most formative days as he gets into shenanigans in the time period between the first and second Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year:
The third new show to be announced during Disney Plus’ two year anniversary celebration, Spider-Man: Freshman Year is an animated series that will tell the stories of Peter Parker’s first days as Spider-Man, long before the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming or even Captain America: Civil War. Set to feature a new animated style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots, the show will finally give us the beginning story of one of the most beloved characters in the MCU. (Although one has to wonder why they didn’t call it Spider-Man: Home Room…)
X-Men ’97:
In perhaps the most exciting, and surprising news, Disney announced a new continuation of the beloved 90s animated X-Men TV show, X-Men ’97. Set to feature new stories set in the timeline from the original show in the 90s, the series will also bring back many of the original voice cast. The most baffling thing is, however, the fact that the Marvel Studios banner is above the logo for the show. Will this be the first inclusion of the X-Men in the larger MCU?!
