In a surprise, but not completely unexpected, announcement, Sony is giving PlayStation 5 owners what they want, and then some…
Via PlayStation.blog, Sony unveiled new colors for their best-selling first-party accessory, the PS5 DualSense controller. The new colors coming your way are Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. The new colors will be joining up with the previously released Cosmic Red and Midnight Black offerings that started off the PlayStation 5’s run of featured colors for the DualSense wireless controller.
But the real surprise in the announcement was the information that Sony is officially releasing first-party covers (plates) for the PlayStation 5.
The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PS5 console covers will become available to gamers starting some time in January 2022 at participating retailers in various locations to include the United States, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Korea, and other major parts of Asia. The Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue PS5 console covers will also launch in these locations during the first half of 2022. Additional territories will see the covers launching at a later time in 2022.
Sony is advising gamers to be sure to check with their local retailers for availability as the exact launch dates for both the new DualSense wireless controller colors and the new PS5 console covers in select regions may vary by location. Currently, pricing for the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PlayStation 5 covers is set for $54.99 (USD) and the new colors for the DualSense controllers will go for $74.99 (USD).
The PS5 covers are Sony’s direct answer to the “aftermarket” plates that were available from the company DBrand. DBrand would, after mocking Sony, soon find themselves in legal trouble with Sony over various trademark and copyright claims and would be forced to pull their Darkplates from sale (twice).
Sony tells gamers that replacing the stock PS5 covers is easy and removing the outer plates only requires owners to “slide them off.” Unfortunately, the PS5 console and console covers are planned to be sold separately—sorry, no new console SKUs for colored systems.
