After a divisive reveal of the PlayStation Pro with a $700 USD price tag, Sony showcased a very limited-edition PlayStation 30th Anniversary Edition bundle that will be available later this year. Will playing up the nostalgia of the original PS days help trigger sales of the Pro, or will it be a futile cash grab?
The original PlayStation will turn 30th on December 3rd. This milestone is highly anticipated and will likely be celebrated–and Sony plans on celebrating with sprinkle of nostalgia and a hefty price tag with consoles and accessories made in the likeness of the original PlayStation.
Here is the info on the PlayStation 30th Anniversary Edition bundle:
- Limited edition PS5® Pro console
- Limited edition DualSense Edge™ wireless controller
- Limited edition DualSense® wireless controller
- Limited edition DualSense charging station
- Limited edition console cover for disc drive
- Limited edition vertical stand
- Original PlayStation controller-style cable connector housing
- 4 PlayStation shapes cable ties
- PlayStation sticker
- Limited Edition PlayStation poster (one of 30 possible designs)
- PlayStation™ paperclip
What makes it so limited? Only 12,300 of these will be for sale, and each console will be numbered. The price of the entire bundle has not been shared at this time, but given the PlayStation Pro listing at $700, one can’t imagine it would be cheap.
I highly doubt it was a coincidence that this Anniversary edition was announced shortly after the PlayStation Pro model. While I do not have any proof, the two reveals were made relatively close to one another.
There have been about $61.7 million units sold thus far; however, Q1 2024 sales paled against the previous year’s sales. The PlayStation5 sales kicked off slowly due to the chip shortage during the COVID pandemic. Now, with a sluggish video game pipeline, many Sony fans are groaning about the new PlayStation 5 Pro.
So, while only I only have circumstantial information, I feel that Sony is leaning on its 30th anniversary to further promote the Pro (and discless Slim) and secure continued sales and extend the life of the generation.
I know that I had zero interest in lighting $700 on fire for the PS Pro; however, I may take out a second mortgage for 30th Anniversary edition that has the Pro with OG PlayStation colors. Oops. Oh, nostalgia.
