Ghost of Tsushima Movie: Chad Stahelski Wants to “Do It Right”

2–3 minutes

The upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is in pre-production and Chad Stahelski, the movie’s director, has given his update on his adaptation of Sucker Punch Productions’ samurai title, saying that at the end of the day, he just wants to “Do it right.”

The director’s remark is referencing the often poor reception of video game adaptations on the big screen such as last month’s Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City.

Speaking with IGN on the red carpet for The Matrix Resurrections, Stahelski commented: “We just want to do it right. You know how video game adaptions can go. So we’re taking our time and doing it right. We’re working very closely with the game developers to make sure we stick to what’s great about it.”

Stahelski also told interviewers that the Ghost of Tsushima production crew is currently working on the script, and that fans of the game “would be very happy with what we’re working on.” The director added that playing through Ghost of Tsushima “many times” is what attracted him to adapt the game.

Stahelski is most known for directing the John Wick films, but his Hollywood resume is centered around performing and coordinating stunts, including as Keanu Reeves’ stunt-double on The Matrix, stunt coordination on Matrix Revolutions and Matrix Reloaded, and as a fight choreographer on 300.

Reported in March 2021, word got out that a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima was in the works along with the news that Sucker Punch’s Peter Kang would serve as an executive producer. The film is reported to be a telling of the story of Jin Sakai, who rises from defeat as the titular “ghost” to liberate his home, the island of Tsushima, from Mongol invaders.

When asked if Jin Sakai voice actor Daisuke Tsuje would be reprising his role for the movie, the director replied, “We’ll see. We haven’t gotten that far yet.”

No release date has been set, and with Stahelski confirming that production is still in the scripting phase, it’ll probably be a while before more concrete news comes about for the movie.

Ghost of Tsushima was released on PS4 in July 2020 and was later given the PS5 update treatment with the release of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut. Check out our Boss Rush Banter feature which asked “What Made Ghost of Tsushima Successful?“
