Splinter Cell Remake In Development at Ubisoft Toronto

In an announcement via a blog post on their website, Ubisoft officially announced that a remake of Splinter Cell is in development at their Toronto studio after being dormant for more than eight years. The game will be built on the company’s Snowdrop Engine, used in games such as The Division, South Park, Mario + Rabbids, Riders Republic, among many others.

“With this remake, we are building a solid base for the future of Splinter Cell,” creative director Chris Auty stated about the game, reinsuring that this remake would remain faithful to what made the series iconic in the first place.

“It’s safe to say a lot of us on the team are stealth purists, and we’re behind that level of seriousness when it comes to those kinds of mechanics, and those sorts of things that we want to see in this game and we’re very, very aware of what makes classic Splinter Cell what it is.”
“It’s important for us to preserve the sense of mastery by supporting players who observe the situations, make their plan, use their gadgets, and outsmart the enemy creatively to deal with the challenges they are presented with. Ideally, they end up coming out on the other side with no one having realized you were even there. That’s the essence of Splinter Cell.”

Splinter Cell originally released on the original Xbox on November 17, 2002 and spawned multiple sequels. The last release Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which was also developed by Ubisoft Toronto, came out in 2013 to middling reception and less than stellar sales due to its release on then-previous generation consoles in the midst of Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
