When Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic hit the original Xbox, it instantly became a must have for the console. BioWare, known more recently for Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem, created one of the best stories in Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back, and arguably still to date, with some wonderful characters, their signature dialog system, and one of the biggest twists in video game history, arguably as big as the movie’s Darth Vader reveal. It was also one of the first major console RPGs that allow players to choose the light side or the dark with decisions throughout the game, each coming with their own outcomes. For all of these reasons and more, KOTOR is still held in high regards today.
In September during a Sony State of Play event, the announcement finally came that Knights of the Old Republic was getting a full on remake from aspyr, a studio more known for making high quality ports of older games. Not much is known about the highly anticipated remake, but some recent reports about the rumored combat system have been revealed, according to YouTuber and underrated insider, MrMattyPlays.
It is heavily rumored that KOTOR will have a real time action combat system reminiscent of 2018’s God of War and Team Ninja’s Nioh, removing the turn-based action choosing combat from the original. This type of combat makes sense, given the popularity of the recent Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order as well as other action heavy games.
Though this is aspyr’s first AAA project, and a major one to boot, they have been working with the Star Wars license for a while, porting older titles like Republic Commando, Jedi Knight II, Jedi Academy, and even KOTOR to newer consoles. The developer has been working closely with LucasFilm Games and has even hired some of that old BioWare team to help bring this game into a new generation.
