The year 2021 brought us many surprising announcements for the gaming community. At the beginning of 2021, we hadn’t heard about games like Metroid Dread, seen gameplay from games like Elden Ring or Halo Infinite, and we had no idea Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in a feature length film.
Now, as we cross the threshold into 2022, we already have a great deal to be excited about. Elden Ring, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and (hopefully!) the sequel to Breath of the Wild, to name a few, are all scheduled for release this next year. But are there any projects that haven’t been announced that you’re optimistic about?
For me, I’d love more ports and remasters of older games. I’m 100% on board with the idea of being able to play any game from the current generation of consoles, whether it be Switch, PlayStation 5, or XBox Series X. In 2021, we saw games like Skyward Sword and Braid get HD Remasters, and ports of games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and The Castlevania Advance Collection brought older classics to newer players. I’m already excited about Banjo-Kazooie coming to Switch via the Expansion Pack, and I’d love to see other classics from the 2000’s era of gaming like Custom Robo or Golden Sun make comebacks.
I’d also love more entries in some more popular IPs. StarFox, for example, hasn’t seen a new game since 2016’s StarFox Zero, and though Pikmin 3 recently got a remaster, I’d go absolutely crazy over Pikmin 4. Any announcements in regards to Elder Scrolls VI would cause massive uproars across the internet. Though many projects announced may not be released in 2022, these announcements will still get us all on the edge of our seats.
Additionally, I’m interested in any new hardware developments. This seems unlikely, with the PS5 and Series X both being so fresh, and the Switch OLED model just coming out in 2021. Still, the idea of a “Switch Pro” gets people talking, even if it’s release isn’t until 2023. Any form of hardware development on either system would be something to be excited about.
