Back in October 2021, Nintendo launched its Switch Online Expansion Pack, an optional upgrade that costs $49.99 (USD) for an individual membership and $79.99 (USD) for a family subscription. This Expansion Pack includes several Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles such as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Starfox 64, Yoshi’s Story, Streets of Rage 2, and Ecco the Dolphin. This pricing model caused a lot of swirl and debate as to whether the price is worth it. However, we all know Nintendo tends to play close to the chest, and something tells me this is only the beginning.
Nintendo has already provided access to a vast NES and SNES library on their base Nintendo Online membership, and fans yearned for more. Now that Nintendo has officially included the Nintendo 64, which console of games should they tackle next?
Many speculate Gameboy games to be next in line. Others hope for the Gamecube. I personally would love to see Nintendo launch Gameboy Advance titles next. It was a successful handheld console with many first and third-party games.
Examples include Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2–of which, the reboot version for the Switch has already experienced several delays. We also have Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Metroid Fusion, Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and WarioWare Twisted to name a few more. While I understand some games are technically available now such as the Castlevania Advance Collection, I feel that has been a complicated issue for Nintendo for a while.
I also feel Gameboy Advance games can provide Nintendo an opportunity to improve their online play. Can you imagine playing Legend of Zelda: Four Swords without all the hardware that used to be required back in the day? I feel that this is a challenge that, if pulled off, could improve Nintendo’s reputation in the online gaming community.
