It’s no surprise that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been a monster success on the Nintendo Switch since its release in 2017, selling 40 million units on top of the 8.5 million on the Wii U since 2014. It’s unique anti-gravity design and massive selection of characters and karts have provided players with fresh track layouts for new and classic maps while also feeling immediately familiar.
It seems Nintendo is finally ready to let fans look under the hood of the next major installment, as Kantan Games’ Dr. Serkan Toto discussed his 2022 predictions with Gamesindustry.biz, saying Mario Kart 9 is a true successor to Mario Kart 8 and claims he knows it’s “in active development”.
“I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

As with most Nintendo rumors, take this with a grain of salt. Even though Mario Kart 8 is still thriving on the console, it is inevitable that Mario Kart 9 will release at some point and fun to think about. But what is this “brand new twist”? Maybe there will be multiple vehicle types like Sonic + All-Stars Racing Transformed or Diddy Kong Racing. Other cool feature they could steal from the mobile game are events and costumes for the racers.
It would be a pleasant surprise for Nintendo to cap off what already looks like a stacked year including titles like Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and The Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with a brand new Mario Kart title.
