Shin Megami Tensei V is the Highest Selling Game in Franchise History

1–2 minutes

Every year, the very reputable and popular Japanese publication Famitsu releases what they call “New Years cards,” which allows gaming companies from all over the country to give thanks to fans and supporters along with updates on sales figures, upcoming projects, and more.

In these New Years cards, developer and publisher Atlus reported that Shin Megami Tensei V has sold over 800,000 units world wide, making it the best selling title in series history, shattering Shin Megami Tensei IV‘s lifetime sales of just over 600,000 units. Though it’s not surprising considering the rise in popularity of spin-off franchise Persona combined the Switch’s overall sales numbers, what makes it impressive is how fast the title sold those units, doing so in less than two months.

Atlus had a massive 2021 with multiple SMT titles and 13 Sentinals: Aegis Rim leading the charge and looks to capitalize on that success in 2022 leading with multiple other projects. Shin Megami Tensei V was released on November 11, 2021 on Nintendo Switch with a rumored PlayStation 4 port coming this year.

What are your thoughts on the success of Shin Megami Tensei V? Are you playing it on Switch? Let us know in the comments, our Discord or Facebook group!
