Sony Manufacturing More PS4s to Deal With PS5 Shortages

Its crazy to think that with all of the success that Sony has had selling their newest console, the PlayStation 5, they are still reporting that they are unable to fulfill demand. As of December 2021, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 in the same amount of time, reporting over 15 million sold. Due to the chip and semiconductor shortages, however, Sony can’t keep them in stock at online retailers for longer than ten minutes.

Now, in a new report from Bloomberg, Sony is trying to deal with these shortages not by redesigning the console itself, but to continue production of the PlayStation 4. Its no surprise that they want to continue pushing the console, at least through 2022, as their biggest exclusives of the year in Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, and Gran Turismo 7 are all making their way to the last-gen console as well.

Why would they manufacture old consoles to offset the new ones you ask? The PlayStation 4 uses a lot of different components, including chips, than the PlayStation 5, so it would make sense to continue to sell them alongside its beefier brother. The PlayStation 4 currently sits at 116.81 million units, the fourth best selling console of all time behind the GameBoy, Nintendo DS, and the PlayStation 2.
