During the pandemic, I have been trying to get into genres of video games that I historically have never played. Games like Pokémon Legends: Arceus or Metroid Dread have become instant favorites of mine even though I used to never really like their respective series. In my ongoing quest to broaden my gameplaying horizons, I picked up Firewatch, a walking simulator adventure game for the Nintendo Switch, and instantly fell in love. I had never played a game like this before, one so rooted in story and character interaction and didn’t have to hide behind flashy action sequences to distract from a flimsy, predictable plot. Now, I’m hungry for more experiences like the one I had with the superb Firewatch, and I could use your help. Which ‘walking sim’ game is your favorite?
I’ve recently asked this question on Twitter and a common response has been What Remains of Edith Finch, a game in which you uncover the titular character’s unique family curse that causes all but one member of each generation to die in unusual ways. People have also recommended Gone Home, a game in which you try to piece together why a woman’s family has gone missing while she was overseas. Another suggestion was The Last Campfire, a more straight-forward puzzle game still rooted in a deep and compelling narrative.
Do you have a favorite game in this genre? What is your recommendation and why do you love it?
